Emporia didn’t replace its industrial economy. It began building what could come next.

For decades, manufacturing was the foundation of Emporia, Kansas’s economy. The community built around that strength—investing in the infrastructure, workforce, and institutional expertise that made Emporia a manufacturing center.

Then, in 2008, one of its largest employers closed.

The loss of roughly 1,500 jobs, coupled with the Great Recession, exposed a vulnerability that went beyond a single plant or industry. Emporia would recover, but the experience raised a bigger question: How can a community build greater economic resilience without walking away from the strengths that made it successful?

Today, Emporia is taking a different approach—building new economic opportunities alongside the strengths that have sustained the community for generations.
